About the Event

Ensuring effective communication between the Total Rewards team and the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is essential for aligning compensation and benefits strategies with the financial goals and objectives of the organization. This session brings together experts in Finance, Total Rewards, and Negotiation to assist Total Rewards professionals in understanding the content, timing, format, challenges, and methods to enhance communication with their CFO. Join us to discover how to pave the way for a successful business partnership!

Speakers


Susan Borke (moderator), the Principal of BorkeWorks, is passionate about helping people develop as effective negotiators. She believes no one is born a master negotiator. Great negotiation skills come from knowledge, training, and practice.  Susan Borke’s years of experience at CBS and National Geographic provided extensive opportunities to hone the negotiation techniques she has taught business professionals for over 30 years. With a legal and financial administration background, she understands the needs of C-level executives and their employees at domestic and international commercial companies, educational institutions, start-ups, government agencies, and nonprofits.


Marvin Irby, retired Chief Administrative Officer and Senior Advisor to the President & CEO, The National Restaurant Association.  Marvin Irby has very recently retired from the role of Chief Administrative Officer and Senior Advisor to the President & CEO of the National Restaurant Association.  During his 14 years at the Association, he also served as the Interim-President & CEO of the National Restaurant Association and CEO of the Association Educational Foundation in both 2020 and 2021.  While in this role, he was selected to the President’s American Economic Revival Group for Restaurants in 2020, where he successfully lobbied for the 2020 CARES Act and the Payroll Protection Program (PPP) Flexibility Act.  He joined the Association in 2010, serving as the Chief Financial Officer and Chief People Officer. Prior to assuming this role, Marvin served as the Executive Vice President & Chief Financial Officer of Shawmut Design & Construction. Marvin also held several financial VP roles for the Walt Disney World Resort, along with several financial executive roles at Pepsico. He has been recognized as a DCA-Live top CFO twice and was the Association Trends 2013 Non-Profit CFO of the Year. His leadership at the National Restaurant Association resulted in its recognition as a “DC Top Workplace” in 2014.  A native of Chicago, Marvin received his bachelor’s degree at Northwestern University and his MBA in Finance and Marketing at Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management. In addition to being active in his church, Marvin currently serves on the Boards of PBS (Chair, Audit Committee), Children International (Treasurer) and Meals on Wheels America, along with being a mentor in various capacities 

Dionne Harris, Senior Vice President, People & Culture, National Restaurant Association.  Dionne joined the National Restaurant Association in 2008. Her career is a testament to the development opportunities and career pathing within the Association, where she has steadily advanced and made significant contributions.  As Senior Vice President of People + Culture at the National Restaurant Association, Dionne oversees all aspects of HR strategy and operations, ensuring alignment with the Association's mission, objectives, and organizational values.  With over 20 years of experience in HR, Dionne has built a career dedicated to creating workplace environments where every individual feels valued and empowered to reach their potential. Previously, she held key roles at the Newspaper Association of America, where she gained valuable experience in association management and HR strategy.  Dionne plays a pivotal role in enhancing organizational effectiveness and is passionate about optimizing the team member experience, supporting the professional growth of the Association's workforce, and cultivating an inclusive workplace environment.


Christine M. Peterson, Executive VP, CFO, Treasurer, CNA Corporation.  Christine Peterson brings more than 30 years of experience to the CNA management team. As chief financial officer, she is a strategic partner to the CEO, responsible for implementing and enhancing CNA's strategic vision and direction in all areas of finance, including planning and analysis, budgeting and procurement, as well as regulatory compliance.  Prior to joining CNA, Peterson held senior leadership positions with Science Applications International Corporation, the Logistics Management Institute, and Arctic Slope Regional Corporation Federal. She specializes in transforming organizations by applying enhanced approaches to business planning, financial reporting, administration, and partnerships with business development and operations colleagues.  Peterson has a Bachelor of Science in Finance from the University of Maryland and has Certified Public Accountant and Charted Global Management Accountant designations. She also earned a Certificate in Executive Leadership from Cornell University.


Elisa Soto, Vice President and Chief People Officer, CNA Corporation. Elisa Soto, a seasoned HR professional with over 25 years of experience, is a firm proponent of a People First Approach. Recognized for her superpower of cultivating trust-based relationships, Elisa currently serves as the Vice President and Chief People Officer at CNA. In her role, she drives the implementation and advancement of the organization's human resources strategy, encompassing organizational planning, change management, learning and development, diversity and inclusion, talent management, and compensation and benefits. Emphasizing clear and open communication, Elisa navigates the HR landscape with a focus on fostering transparent relationships within the workplace.  Elisa's dedication to her craft is underscored by her professional certifications from the Society of Human Resource Management and WorldatWork, underscoring her expertise in the HR domain. With a track record of influencing pivotal HR matters across diverse functional areas, Elisa Soto stands out as a visionary leader who champions a human-centric approach to organizational success.
